If it is your first visit to the park—no matter what season—the famed Yosemite Valley will no doubt be part of your itinerary. El Capitan, Cathedral Spires, Bridalveil, and Yosemite Falls are all "must-sees." This large, modern hotel is at the eastern end of the valley.
Season: Year-round.
Accommodations: The lodge has 495 rooms ranging from deluxe to the more affordable standard rooms. All rooms offer standard motel style lodging with telephones and private or central bathrooms, but no televisions. Deluxe rooms have a private patio or balcony, private dressing area, activity table, and views of either waterfalls or mountains. There are also cabins with a private or central bath that accommodate up to five people. Cabins are furnished with beds, blankets, and linens, but do not have kitchens, telephones, or televisions.
Special Features: The lodge is part of a compound that includes a swimming pool; a wide range of dining facilities, including poolside fast food; a post office; an outdoor theater; bike rentals; and a tour desk.
Spots, activities and attractions: The Sunrise Camera walk, a two-hour expedition on flat trails to some of the best valley floor sites and landmarks for snapping photographs, leaves the lodge at 6 A.M. Walk, drive, bike, or ride the shuttle to stop no. 7 near the lodge for a quarter-mile walk on a flat trail to the base of Yosemite Falls, the world's fifth highest waterfall. All the valley sites are within easy reach of the lodge, including the Happy Isles Nature Center, which features exhibits and activities and attractions just for kids. Happy Isles is the start of several trails, including the Mist Trail to Vernal Falls, which is best suited for children eight and older. From shuttle stop no. 17, there is an easy one-hour hike to Mirror Lake where you can often see the reflection of Half Dome.
