Families who plan ahead can escape Yosemite Valley's summer crowds by visiting the park's less-visited Wawona section. This southern section of the park is loaded with historic architecture and great swimming spots along the Merced River. Families with small children love Wawona for the fun Mariposa Grove tram ride through some of the world's oldest and tallest trees and for the Pioneer Yosemite History Center, where costumed docents reenact nineteenth-century life. The main lodge lobby has board games and a piano player in the evening. Spots, activities and attractions: A short walk leads to river swimming holes and the engaging Pioneer History Center with nineteenth-century crafts and stagecoach rides. About 200 yards upstream from the Center's covered bridge are small swimming and wading pools with big, flat rocks for sunbathing. Winter is especially enchanting; the area surrounding the hotel is perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoe walks. Less than an hour away is downhill skiing at Badger Pass. Mariposa Grove of the Giant Sequoias is a short drive from the hotel.
