Families who plan ahead can escape Yosemite Valley's summer crowds by also visiting the park's less traveled Tuolumne area. The Tuolumne high country lies off Tioga Road, which bisects the park from southwest to northeast. Along the road are lakes and the spectacular wildflowers of Tuolumne Meadows, surrounded by peaks and glacier-polished domes. Campfire gatherings are held nightly, often with special children's songs and stories. Eight- to twelve-year-olds can participate in a Junior Ranger program. Tuolumne is a favorite base camp for people heading to the High Sierra Camps or for day hikes in the Tuolumne Meadows area.
Season: Mid-June through Labor Day.
Accommodations: The lodge has sixty-nine canvas tent cabins with beds (all bedding is provided) and centrally located restrooms.
Special Features: Breakfast and dinner are available in a central dining tent beside the river.
Spots, activities and attractions: Within walking distance are a grocery store, stables, the mountaineering school, gas station, post office, and a hamburger stand. The one and a half mile hike from Tuolumne to Dog Lake is a bit of a climb at first, but there is good swimming and fishing at the end. A great half-day hike to Lambert Dome from Soda Springs at Tuolumne, past many bubbling springs, leads to easy rock climbing on the dome and views of all the major peaks in this area. For older children, an evening guided walk, the Night Prowl, begins at Tuolumne Meadow at 9:30 P.M. to see and hear owls, bats, and other nocturnal animals.
