This park is a protected mountain wilderness with deer, bears, bobcats, and untouched forests. Hiking trails lead to numerous waterfalls and old homesites The Stony Man and Whiteoak Canyon trails are easy and beautiful and there are naturalist programs for children
Shenandoah River Outfitters (540—743—4159) have tube and canoe rentals for rides down the Shenandoah. The Mountain Heritage Festival Days, held the last Saturday and Sunday in July, feature dancing, games for children, craft demonstrations, and exhibits. The Camp Hoover Days festival is held the second weekend in August.
Near the park at Luray Caverns (540—743—6551), fifteen minutes from the junction of the park entrance and U.S. 211, the "Great Stalacpipe Organ" actually plays concert-quality music. The Skyline Caverns, known for flower formations called anthrodites, are a five-minute drive from the junction of the park entrance and U.S. 340 in Front Royal. Forty minutes from the junction of the park entrance and U.S. 211 is the New Market Battlefield Historical Park (540—740—3101), a 240-acre park with a museum focusing on the history of the Civil War.
Note: In addition to the accommodations listed here, Bears Den Lodge is a beautiful stone hostel with private family rooms located thirty-five miles southwest of the park.
