Rocky Mountain National Park is less than a two-hour drive from Denver, but it seems worlds away with three hundred miles of hiking trails plus wildlife, including mule, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, coyotes, black bears, mountain lions, and bobcats. Families can choose from a range of in-expensive accommodations and activities and attractions. To start, at the Park Village North (at the park's entrance on U.S. 34) young kids can ride a miniature train and climb the observation tower.
Estes Park, just outside the park, offers a hub of activities and attractions for families. Horseback and pony rides are available at the National Park Village Stables (970—586—5269), Sombrero Stables (970—586—4577), and Cowpoke Corner Corral (970—586—5890), and at Hi Country Stables in the park at Glacier Creek and Moraine Park (970—586—2337). River rafting is avail-able through Rapid Transit Rafting (303—586—8852). Golfing is available at Regulation 9 (970—586—8146) or at two public courses. In town there is an aerial tramway (970—586—3675). Dick's Rock Museum (970—586— 4180) has rocks, geodes, and crystals. The Estes Park Aquatic Center (970—586—2340) has an Olympic-size pool, kiddie pool, diving tank, and lap areas. You can rent all the equipment you need for boating, fishing, or windsurfing at the Lake Estes Marina (970—586—2011).
Walking and hiking trails abound in the park. Easy trails recommended for families include the walk around Bear Lake, East Inlet to Adam's Falls, and the hike to the pool at Fern Lake. A helpful book to order before you go is A Family Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park by Lisa Evans (Seattle: The Mountaineers, 1991; $12.95), which lists family hikes and activities and attractions. It is available from the Rocky Mountain Nature Association, Estes Park, Colorado 80517, 970—586—1258.
Note: In addition to the lodgings listed below there are two family camps adjoining Rocky Mountain National Park in a magnificent alpine setting. For details about these accommodations, see the YMCA of the Rockies at Estes Park Center and at Snow Mountain Ranch.
