Set on an island in the northwestern section of Lake Superior Isle Roy ale has no roads or cars. It is accessible by boat from Grand Portage, on Minnesota's north shore, or from Houghton and Copper Harbor in the copper country of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Summer water activities and attractions here include boating along 600 square miles of waterways, swimming, and hiking through moss-carpeted forests and ridges with panoramic views of Lake Superior and Canada. Kids especially enjoy the hike to explore the island's old copper mine. In the middle of Isle Royale there are remote lakes to explore, and moose roam all over the island. The lake trout fishing here is superb.
Season: June through September.
Accommodations: Families prefer staying in one of the twenty housekeeping cottages, which have one room with a kitchenette (utensils are supplied), one double bed, and two bunk beds. There are also hotel rooms in the lodge.
Special Features: The island is known for blueberry picking (the dining room serves delicious pancakes). In August many people swim in the harbor, and there are motorboats and canoes for rent. Cottage guests can eat at the lodge dining room; a grocery store and laundry facilities are nearby.

Spots, activities and attractions: In addition to the many hiking trails, there is a marina with boat rental. Guided fishing tours can also be arranged. Superior Trips (612—788—4560) offers scuba-diving explorations of ship wrecks, meals included.
