Built in 1903 of local logs and stone and recently designated as a national historic landmark, the original hotel with its six-story atrium lobby, wraparound balconies, and massive four-sided fireplace is the largest known log structure of its kind. Legend has it that at night a ghost walks the creaky floors of Season: May through mid-October.
Accommodations: Although the hotel is expensive, moderately priced rooms that sleep four people with private baths are available.
Special Features: In the summer, classical music concerts take place in the lobby. Guests can watch Old Faithful blow from the second-floor balcony. A full-service dining room and fast food outlet are located directly off the lobby.
Children eleven and under stay free.
Spots, activities and attractions: There is a very easy hike on a paved trail and boardwalk through the Upper Geyser Basin, the area around Old Faithful, which has one-quarter of the world's geysers. A walk around the geysers at night is memorable. At the far end of the walk is the brilliant turquoise Morning Glory Pool geyser, one of the park's most exquisite.
