Built in 1937, this hotel is in the region of Mammoth Hot Springs, a thermal area where abundant hot springs have formed the tinted lime-stone terraces. The hotel's Map Room contains a large wooden map of the United States made of fifteen different woods from nine countries.
Season: Mid-December through March and late May through mid-September.
Accommodations: The hotel has both cottage-type cabins as well as hotel rooms. Four of the cabin units have private hot tubs. Frontier cabins sleep up to five with two double beds and a rollaway bed. Budget cabins sleep up to four and have a central, shared bathroom. Linens and towels are included.
Special Features: One- and two-hour guided horseback rides are available from late May through mid-September. There is also a full dining room.
Cost: Although the hotel is expensive, moderately priced rooms are available. Children eleven and under stay free.
Spots, activities and attractions: A boardwalk meanders through Mammoth Terraces, a collection of unusual geothermal features. Twelve miles south of Mammoth is a roadside exhibit that explains Obsidian Cliff, a cliff made of volcanic glass. Native Americans traded the obsidian for arrowheads and tools. Farther south is Norris, the site of the world's largest geyser, Steamboat Geyser, which erupts twice as high as Old Faithful.
