A classic old hotel on the northern shore of Lake Yellowstone, the lodge was completed in 1891 and remodeled in 1903 with its current Colonial look. Fifty-foot Ionic columns are its trademark. The hotel's sitting room has a sweeping view of the lake, and a string quartet and pianist often entertain in the hotel's large sunroom. Summer marina activities and attractions include scenic cruises and hourly outboard and rowboat rentals. Guided fishing boats are available for charter.
Season: Late May through late September.
Accommodations: In addition to the hotel's deluxe accommodations, there are moderately priced private cabins, which all have their own baths. Cabins sleep up to five with two double beds and a rollaway bed.
Special Features: Lake-view dining room with reasonably priced meals; kids can order hamburgers.
Children eleven and under stay free.
Spots, activities and attractions: The lake has several picnic sites and swimming spots; ask at the hotel. North of the lake, don't miss thundering Mud Volcano and Dragon's Mount, a turbulent hot spring inside a cavern.
