This lodge, geared especially to families, is located at the southern edge of the national park overlooking Lake Quinault. In the midst of one of the few rain forests in North America, its setting is one of the best on the Olympic Peninsula.
Season: Year-round.
Accommodations: Built in 1926, Lake Quinault has a main lodge, lakeside rooms, and rooms with a lakeview and/or a fireplace; all rooms have private bathrooms. The least expensive rooms are located in the Annex, which was built in 1923. Some of the rooms in the Main Lodge overlook the parking lot rather than the lake, so be sure to inquire ahead of time.
Special Features: Adjacent to the pool is a game room with equipment for horseshoes, volleyball, and Frisbee, as well as pinball, Ping-Pong, and video games. Guests can play badminton and croquet on the meticulously kept lawn overlooking the lake, or rent canoes and sea cycles in the summer. Fishing on the lake is highly rated. The lodge's playground has swings and a slide. The lodge has a full-service restaurant year-round and an outdoor cafe during the summer. The staff at the lodge's front desk can inform you about the park's nature programs and will provide additional games and puzzles for indoor play. They also will help arrange baby-sitting; they even have rubber sheets for bed-wetters!
The lodge offers many special deals, including midweek or off-season specials, so it pays to inquire.
Spots, activities and attractions: Hiking trails through the rain forest start at the lodge; maps are available at the front desk. There is horseback riding available further up the valley.
