Grand Canyon National Park's more remote North Rim is in northern Arizona, two hundred and fourteen miles from the park's more popular South Rim. This lodge, a national historic landmark, was designed in the 1920s by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who was also the architect of Yosemite National Park's Ahwahnee Hotel. Constructed of massive lime-stone walls and timbered ceilings, it features dramatic vistas of the can-yon.
Season: Mid-May through late October. The North Rim is closed in the winter.
Accommodations: "Western" cabins feature a fireplace, two double beds, a full bath, telephone, and private porches. "Frontier" cabins are more rustic, with a double bed, single bed, and a bathroom with a shower only. These cabins are a short walk from the canyon's rim. ‘ ‘Pioneer" cabins have two rooms that are separated by a bathroom with a shower. Motel rooms have double beds and a bathroom with a shower. There are no cooking facilities in any of the rooms.
Special Features: Dining room in the lodge, outdoor grills in the park's picnic areas, laundry facilities, and a grocery story on the premises.
Spots, activities and attractions: Along the Bright Angel Point Trail, there is an easy one and a half mile self-guided nature trail, which leads to a spectacular view of the Canyon; it begins by the Lodge. Summer activities and attractions at the North Rim include pack tours and ranger programs.
