Crater Lake Lodge, perched on the rim of the lake, reopened in 1995 after a seven-year closure and a $15 million renovation. The lodge now carries forth the grand and nostalgic architectural tradition of mountain lodges such as Mount Hood's Timberline or Yosemite's Ahwahnee with huge tree trunk columns, black-steel-and-parchment cylinder lights, and massive stone fireplaces.
Season: May through October.
Accommodations: The seventy refurbished guest rooms have private bathrooms, some with claw-foot tubs in front of floor-to-ceiling windows with fantastic views of the lake. Other rooms have views of the forest and meadow. No telephones or televisions, just lots of windows!
Special Features: Board games available to check out; visitors have many dining options at the lodge and in nearby Rim Village, where the Llao Rock Cafe serves cafeteria-style meals.
Children under twelve stay free in parents' room.
Spots, activities and attractions: Summer campfire programs are presented at the Mazama Campground, and the park offers many special activities and attractions for children. Check at the visitor center.
