Best national parks for family vacation packages: Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Family Vacations

An excellent book to order before you go is Best Hikes with Children in Utah, which highlights trails in and around Arches and Canyonlands (order by calling Canyonlands Natural History Association at 801—259—6003).
Young science buffs will like the short hike to Upheaval Dome; one theory asserts that the dome's giant crater was formed by the impact of an ancient meteorite. There are many companies authorized by the National Park Service to lead white-water river tours, calm water jet boat tours, backcountry vehicle trips, and mountain bike and backpack tours of the park; for a complete listing write to Canyonlands National Park, 2282 South West Resource Boulevard, Moab, Utah 84532, or call 801— 259—7164.
We found the canoe treks offered by Tex's Riverways (PO Box 67, Moab, Utah 84532, 801—259—5101) to be an especially good deal. Tex's offers canoe treks on the Green and Colorado Rivers through desert canyons, including the remote and wild parts of Stillwater Canyon in Canyonlands. Floats on the Green River last from four to ten days; the floating is safe and the water calm. You are ferried to your starting point by ground shuttle. The Colorado River floats are shorter, lasting from a half day to three days, and a wide variety of trips take you through natural arches, Indian ruins, and scenic canyons. Deer, beaver, desert bighorn sheep, coyotes, and birds are common sights. The Labyrinth Canyon of the Green River trip (four to five days) costs $40 per person for ground shuttle and $15 per day for the canoe, paddles, and life vests. Stillwater Canyon trips through Canyonlands National Park past Indian ruins and Anasazi Indian petroglyphs cost $110 per person for jet boat return to Moab and ground shuttle and $15 per day for canoe paddles and vests. Those prices are valid at time of editing this listing.
