Telephone: 602—638—2401; fax: 602—638—9247
Season: Year-round.
Accommodations: This rustic lodge on the South Canyon Rim has a wide range of moderately priced rooms and cabins; some cabins have fireplaces.
Special Features: There are two restaurants on the premises; the kids' lunch and dinner menus at all park lodges offer burgers, chicken nuggets, and other kids' standards.
Spots, activities and attractions: West of the lodge is the Bright Angel Trail; try hiking a portion, however small, for an up-close canyon view. Along the three-mile round-trip hike to the Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse you'll see many fossils and Indian pictographs. Mule rides depart from the Stone Corral at the head of this trail. An even easier walk with young children is the Rim Trail, which hugs the South Rim for about three miles from the Yavapai Observation Station; the station has dramatic canyon views and geological exhibits.
